IL FANTASMA DI UN LIBERTINO: L’ANIMA DI FERRANTE PALLAVICINO NELLA CULTURA DEL SEICENTO

(THE GHOST OF A LIBERTINE. THE SOUL OF FERRANTE PALLAVICINO AND THE LIBERTINE CULTURE)

Keywords: Libertinism, Pallavicino, Heterodoxy, Venice, Sarpi.

This article examines a writing of the Venetian area of the first half of the seventeenth century entitled L’Anima by Ferrante Pallavicino. It is an anonymous pamphlet made by the Accademia degli Incogniti in which the protagonist Ferrante Pallavicino, a libertine writer beheaded in 1642 due to his polemical interventions against Urban VIII. Pallavicino is presented as a martyr who paid with his life his views against the “tyranny of the Barberini”. Pallavicino had sided against the pope on the occasion of the Castro war. Among the various reasons of interest in this writing we note the revival of typical themes of Paolo Sarpi: anti-Jesuitism, the controversy against Rome, the superiority of the council over the pope, the criticism of the customs and external religiosity of the Italians. In the article, various themes are examined that put this writing in communication with the libertine tradition, furthermore some possible sources of the libellus are identified, in particular “The Benefit of Christ”.

DOMENICO MACCARANO: LE VICISSITUDINI DI UNO STAMPATORE NAPOLETANO

(DOMENICO MACCARANO: HARDSHIPS OF A NEAPOLITAN PRINTER)

Keywords: Inquisition, Neapolitan history, book censorship, jurisdiction, XVII century history.

This paper aims to show how censorship represented a facet of the jurisdictional tug of war between the Kingdom of Naples and the Holy See by relating the hardships of a Neapolitan printer, Ferdinando Maccarano, at the hands of the Archiepiscopal Court. Maccarano was prosecuted trice in less than two years, while the first two prosecutions came to nothing, the last led to a trial that dragged on for nearly seven years. Maccarano’s case(s) might not have been pivotal in resolving the jurisdictional issue, yet it shows how the problem permeated all social strata and could shed light on how the Neapolitan political power handled it.

IL CONSILIARISMO BRITANNICO 1918-1921

(BRITISH CONSILIARISM 1918-1921)

Keywords: Left Communism, Communism, Revolution, Socialism, Marxism.

This work, which starts from some unpublished documents in the British Library in London - Pankhurst Archive, analyzes the birth and development of the British consiliarist movement immediately after the October Revolution. Two main groups of consiliarist orientation emerge within the Communist Party of Great Britain: the Worker Suffrage Federation (WSF) and the British Socialist Party (BSP). Among the British consiliarists we remember mainly for the BSP George Peet, Albert Samuel Inkpin and Joseph King, while for the WSF we have Sylvia Pankhurst and Leonard Augustine Motler; the latter will also influence the Chinese consiliarism and, last but not least, C. Hagberg Wright.

Both of the above sections initiated the Council or Left Communism movement, as an alternative to the political reality offered by post- revolutionary communism, to support an "international socialism" and direct democracy through the establishment of factory councils. As evidence of how the British consiliarist movement was relevant, Lenin wrote, in June 1920, Left Communism: as disorder infantil precisely to discredit the British consiliarist policy in front of international public opinion. Despite the “attention” of the Russian leader to the British comrades and the relevant relationships established with the rest of the European consiliarists, Left Communism remains a field of investigation still little investigated.

JOHN A. HOBSON. UN LIBERALISMO ERETICO CONTRO LA SUPREMAZIA DELLO SPIRITO ECONOMICO

(JOHN A. HOBSON. AN HERETIC LIBERALISM AGAINST THE SUPREMACY OF THE ECONOMIC SPIRIT)

Keywords: John A. Hobson, Liberalism, Liberal democracy, Human welfare, Organic Plan.

This essay intends to investigate John A. Hobson’s theory of liberal- ism from a political perspective, starting from his declaration of the death of liberalism, analysing his writings on social problems to ex- plain his so called science of human welfare. In particular, the essay focuses on some crucial knots around which his revision of liberalism moves: 1. the need for an ethical vision of economy; 2. the conception of society, subjectivity and the state in the face of the crisis of individualism and laissez faire; 3. his conception of an a «organic plan of social progress» and its political meaning. The analysis of these aspects of his work shows his importance for the history of political thought also beyond his famous study on imperialism and shows the rise of a new concept of liberal democracy, bringing into light its problems and contradictions.

GENDER, RACE, AND ETHNICITY: LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN IMMIGRANTS AND THE GLASS CEILING IN THE UNITED STATES. AN INTERSECTIONAL ANALYSIS

Keywords: Glass ceiling, Gender, Race, Ethnicity, Intersectionality, Labor market.

In this article I analyze the insertion of Latin American Non-Hispanic Whites and African Americans and immigrant men and women in managerial occupations in the United States and establish the extent to which the intersectionality of gender, race, and ethnicity can explain the unequal participation of workers in these occupations.  In the analysis I make use of data from the American Community Survey (ACS 2019), from which I conduct descriptive analyses and fit econometric models. The results confirm that the lower participation of African Americans and immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean in managerial occupations is in many cases due to their lower human capital, but also to the effect generated by the intersection of the social constructs of gender, race and ethnicity.
