DALLA TRANSLATIO IMPERII AL CERTAMEN PRO IMPERIO: DANTE E L’AGONISMO DELLA STORIA

(FROM THE TRANSLATIO IMPERII TO THE CERTAMEN PRO IMPERIO: DANTE AND AGONISTIC HISTORY)

Keywords: Dante, Monarchy, Roman History, Translatio Imperii, Roman Empire

The historical reconstruction of the Roman Empire that Dante undertakes in the second book of the Monarchia is grounded on the agonistic similitude of the certamen. As an instrument to ascertain the will of God, the 'race' for world domination won by the Roman people would have established an inviolable right to universal monarchy in the hands of the Roman Emperor. Strengthened by this demonstration, Dante disputes the legal nature of the subsequent translationes Imperii, beginning with the Donation of Constantine, especially whereas they are interpreted as a sign of the supreme pontifical power in political matters: the Holy Roman Empire is the direct heir of the universal monarchy gained by right from the Roman people and its authority depends directly on the divine will.

ROUSSEAU, LOCKE ODER MARSILIUS? DIE IDEENGESCHICHTLICHEN WURZELN DES PRINZIPS DER VOLKSSOUVERÄNITÄT

(ROUSSEAU, LOCKE OR MARSILIUS? THE ROOTS OF THE PRINCIPLE OF THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE PEOPLE IN THE HISTORY OF POLITICAL IDEAS)

Keywords: Democracy, Supreme power, Legislation, Representation, Participation

According to the prevailing opinion, the classical formulation of the principle of the sovereignty of the people is found in Rousseau. Against that view, this article argues that Marsilius of Padua and Locke should be regarded as earlier pioneers and important forerunners of this principle. To demonstrate this thesis, the paper examines Marsilius’s conception of the “human legislator” and Locke’s ideas on legislation, representation, and on the limitation of the legislative power. Though Locke excludes the majority of the people from the right to be represented in the legislative power, his concept of this “supreme power” is progressive compared to the conceptions of “sovereignty” found in Bodin and Hobbes. Even for Rousseau, women are still excluded from the sovereignty of the people. This is a strong argument to include Locke and Marsilius in the history of the idea of the sovereignty of the people.

I DEPUTATI SICILIANI AL PARLAMENTO NAPOLETANO DEL 1820-1821

(THE SICILIAN DEPUTIES AT NEAPOLITAN PARLIAMENT IN 1820-1821)

Keywords: Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Neapolitan Parliament, deputies, Sicily, elections, Spanish constitution.

Historiography, in recent years, has dedicated new attention to the study of the 'continental' representatives elected to the first Representative Assembly, which assembled in Naples on 1st October 1820. However, the reflection given to those protagonists, to the present day, has not been matched by similar research on the Sicilian deputies who animated that Parliamentary Assembly with their attendance. The aim of this study is, therefore, to identify even for the insular part of the Kingdom, those who have taken advantage of the role they had been invested with, in order to improve the island's fortunes, elected during a complex moment of Sicilian history, passed from Regnum to dominio ultra pharum after 1816.

DUE GENERAZIONI A CONFRONTO: CARLO ROSSELLI E RODOLFO MONDOLFO

(TWO GENERATIONS COMPARED: CARLO ROSSELLI AND RODOLFO MONDOLFO)

Keywords: Carlo Rosselli, Rodolfo Mondolfo, Socialism, Democracy, Fascism

This essay compares the ideas of Carlo Rosselli (1899-1937) with the thought of Rodolfo Mondolfo (1877-1976). It pays attention to the time span from the Great War to the advent of fascism, and in particular to the exchange of interventions published by "Critica sociale” between 1922 and 1923. The reason for this choice is based on the conviction that, placed in the context of the crisis of Italian socialism, the analysis of the dialectical duel between the young Rosselli and the already mature Mondolfo can reveal itself as the synthesis of a rift between two generations, divided not so much from irreconcilable ethical-political values, as from the authors’ opposite judgments on the past and the present, and their divergent answers to the dramatic question “What to do?”. Between Rosselli and Mondolfo the line of understanding is also broken by differences that concern the socialist theory and practice, as well as their vision and temperament.

I PRODROMI DEL PENSIERO POLITICO DI EMILIO LUSSU

(PRODROMES OF EMILIO LUSSU’S POLITICAL THOUGHT)

Keywords: Action, Federalism, Socialism, Freedom, Republicanism

The article aims to investigate the political thought of Emilio Lussu through three directions: federalism, socialism, freedom. The central idea is that these great theoretical bases accompanied Lussu’s entire political itinerary finding their roots in a political program, the political program of the Sardinian fighters, discussed and approved in the town of Macomer between 8 and 9 August 1920. The Macomer’s program turn out to be, in its federalist claim, a spark capable of reverberating in Lussu’s future thinking. Written by Lionello De Lisi and endorsed by Lussu, in it we find the activism of the fighters of the Brigata Sassari, the only Italian division with entirely regional recruitment. Although theoretically weak and largely utopian, the Macomer program proposed the centrality of autonomies and the dignity of labor, proletarians and peasants, as indispensable points for postwar revival, averting, however, any communist hypothesis. The two parts of the article aim to trace the genesis of the program and its future weight in Emilio Lussu’s political battles.
